This medicine contains the active ingredient methylprednisolone which belongs to a group of medicines called topical corticosteroids (topical steroids). It is prescribed to relieve symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis, which are manifested as inflammation, edema, thickening of the skin, coarseness of the skin surface, redness and itching. Methylprednisolone is available in various forms, and this medicine is available in form of a cream and an ointment.

Is Methylprednisolone suitable for me?

Methylprednisolone is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to methylprednisolone or to other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you have skin problems such as acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis (itching around your back passage or private parts), skin infection
  • If you have TBC (tuberculosis), or syphilis in the area to be treated, from virus diseases (for example: chicken pox/varicella, herpes zoster), or post-vaccination skin reactions

In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • suffered a previous case of glaucoma
  • are applying to a large surface area
  • are applying the cream on broken skin or within the skin folds
  • are applying near eyes or on eyelids
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

Methylprednisolone interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Methylprednisolone?

This medicine is available in form of cream and ointment.

You should take methylprednisolone exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • You should usually apply methylprednisolone once a day.
  • The amount that you should apply is commonly measured by fingertip units (FTUs). Your doctor will tell you how many of the FTUs to use.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not apply two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Methylprednisolone side effects?

Like all medicines methylprednisolone can cause side effects, including:

Common:

  • feeling of burning, pain, redness irritation or itching of the skin.

Very rare:

  • an allergic skin reaction
  • thinning and dryness of your skin
  • an increase or reduction in hair growth or hair loss and changes in skin color
  • perioral dermatitis
  • hair follicle inflammation
