This medicine contains the active ingredient metronidazole which belongs to a group of medicines called antiprotozoal and antibacterial agents. This medicine is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial vaginitis caused by Gardnerella vaginalis and trichomoniasis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis (bacterial infections of the vagina caused by increase in the amount of naturally present bacteria). The usual symptoms are discharge and unpleasant smell.
Is Metronidazole suitable for me?
Metronidazole is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it
- if you are allergic to metronidazole or to other ingredients of this medicine
In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:
- have liver damage
- have hematological disorders
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
Metronidazole interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Metronidazole?
This medicine is available in form of a vaginal tablet.
You should take metronidazole exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
- The usual dose is one 500 mg vaginal tablet per day (inserted into the vagina).
Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and use the medicine at the same time each day. Do not apply two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Metronidazole side effects?
Like all medicines metronidazole can cause side effects, including:
- loss of appetite
- diarrhea or constipation
- metallic taste
- dry tongue
- irritation, itching
- epigastric disorders
- abdominal cramps
- dizziness, vertigo
- ataxia, confusion
- hallucinations, psychosis
- impaired movement coordination
- transient visual disturbances
- headache and drowsiness
- pathological liver enzyme levels, hepatitis and jaundice
- skin rash
